We have been having a blast lately topwater fishing for large amberjacks! We are consistently catching 50 lbers on topwater poppers, jigs, live bait… however you want to catch them! Make sure you click “MORE….” to see the pics of them hanging around the boat. Jigging offshore has been very good, with a few larger African Pompano still biting, and numerous large red grouper. The grouper jigging has been difficult as of recent due to extreme current. The king mackerel fishing has been very strong lately, however we have been having to run farther than usual this time of year to find them. Look for them off of Cripple Rock to the North, and between the Schoolhouse and WR-4 to the South. Most fish are between 10-15 lbs, however we have had….........
Offshore, the blackfin tuna and wahoo have been biting very good. We have been catching them both jigging and trolling, but recently casting topwater lures has produced blackfins consistently upwards of 30 lbs. If you have never cast offshore artificials for large blackfins, this is the most fun you could ever have with a rod and reel in your hand! The king mackerel, despite slowly warming waters, can be found in the 30-35 mile range. Look for 66 degree water and bait. Black sea bass fishing has been very good, and has allowed us to make it through the shallow water grouper closure. Closer to the beach, A few reds are starting to move around the inshore waters. The bluefish are starting to show back up and I have heard a few preliminary reports of Atlantic bonito! Click “MORE….” to view more pics!.......

The fishing out of Wrightsville Beach continues to remain strong, both inshore and offshore. Red drum both in the creeks as well as the inlets are biting well, with the best bet including soft plastics on jigheads and Carolina rigged finger mullet. There are still plenty of Spanish mackerel and bluefish along the beaches, and can be targeted both trolling Yo Zuri deep divers and clarkspoons. The fish are keyed in on very small bait, and when seen in these schools of bait can be caught on small ½ oz. diamond jigs. The flounder bite is very strong, both inshore and along the nearshore structures. I had the pleasure of taking two young anglers, and although it wasn’t the best conditions, we were able to find a few nice flatties on live bait up to 5 lbs. Offshore, the gag grouper bite is very good. Ledges in the 10-25 mile range have held plenty of fish, with live pinfish being the go to bait. In these same areas….....
Over the past week or so, fishing has been much slower than previously. The dog days of the summer are definitely here, however this does not mean there are no fish being caught. The flounder bite has been very good recently. This includes the inshore as well as the nearshore fishery. For both, it has seemed that the larger fish are coming from the southern areas, while fish in numbers can be caught to the north. Scented soft plastics on 1/8 oz. jigheads are the best bet inshore, while in the ocean 1/2 oz. jigheads and bucktails tipped with small jerkbaits do the most damage. When they won’t bite the artificials, live mullet on Carolina rigs are the best bet. Be sure to use a beefy hook when targeting the flatties in the ocean, because you never know when you will be greeted with a smaller gag grouper or oversized red drum. Referring to drum, they are still being caught quite well on the flats and bays inshore. Early and late account for the majority of the action, however tide-based bites are still existent throughout the day. Topwater walking baits and swimbaits are the best way to not only catch the drum, but eliminate a lot of water when attempting to locate them. The spanish mackerel bite is great one day and slower the next, however more and more fish are being found off the beach a ways. Many of the bites are coming on top and Blue Water Candy spanish daisys have been outfishing clarkspoons 10:1…..
